Sarah and Bronwyn Visit, Big Snowy Owl, and Cocoa Blocks

This show is sponsored by my Longaberger home Business www.longaberger.com/paula and Quince and Company.

If you are looking to support American goods, then you can start with Quince & Co with their beautiful and reasonably priced wools sourced in the US. Check out Finch, their new fingering weight in colors inspired by nature.

Needle Notes

Paula’s Projects: Woodturner’s Pully. Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Saddle Shoulder Sweater. After washing and blocking it measures out perfectly!

Label for sweater. I tried a wool label, first ironing onto freezer paper to stiffen the fabric. Bronwyn suggested printing on computer. I may try backstitching on counted cross stitch fabric. Ecological Wool makes a very light but warm sweater.

Baby Sweater on Two Needles and more EZ

This show is sponsored by Quince & CO   www.quinceandco.com

Thanks for the birthday wishes last week!

Bereft by Robert Frost

Baby Sweater on Two Needles by Elizabeth Zimmermann from Knitter’s Almanac.  It is better known as February Baby Sweater.

The February Lady Sweater (not by EZ) is actually more popular than the FBS. Projects on Ravelry: 6675 for Baby Sweater and 11,505 for FLS by Pamela Wynne.

Knitter’s Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmerman.  February.

Babies Things.  Have knitted everything in this chapter but the bonnet with the flap over the shoulders.

Leggings.  I have made at least two pair.  Red and white striped ones were the cutest.  Not the most practical garment for modern moms.

Blanket knitted from center out.  Have done it with lace and also in a heavier yarn with texture pattern and colorwork. Was told that pioneer woman put a cream or white border on blankets so Baby would perceive this is a boundary.  Per my experience, did not work.

Double knitting blanket was a carriage blanket.  I used Schoolhouse Press Sheepsdown and my own handspun.  May have steeked and put a zipper in it.

Pete’s Socks…pulled off the colors!

Handed Down Patterns. Topic started by nitiram.   Her Mother’s slipper/bootie pattern--she called pods.  Under “Some Things Never Change…”

In The Pipeline: EZ Saddle Shoulder Sweater

$14.99 Interweave knits Holiday Gifts.  Holiday 2011  Some of my favorites are McHenry by Susan B Anderson, Hollyberry Bonnet and Cape by Kyoko Nakyoshi, and Handwork Mitts by Julie Turjoman.  Recommended.

High Note:Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls/Cinnamon Raisin Bread.  Used the Best Whole Wheat Bread Recipe from www.urbanhomemaker.com.  Divided dough in half.  One half for a loaf of bread and the other half made two pans of cinnamon rolls.  Streusel:  ½ c brown sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon.  I use Penzey’s.  Roll out dough.  Spread with softened or melted butter.  Sprinkle topping on and roll up.  For the rolls I reserved a few Tbs topping.  Took rolls out after 20 min.  Brushed tops with butter and sprinkled on the streusel.  Baked another 5 min.

I read a letter from Elizabeth Zimmermann that was written to me in Jan 1980.  A photo of the letter is on the show blog.  www.knittingpipeline.com.  References to Moebius and her development of the concept.

The musical selection today is The Moon of Wintertime by Lydia McCauley.

Pipeliner Notes

I read a note from Karin ("miterwriter" on Ravelry).  A little brown bat has been living on a light fixture in their garage for almost 15 years!  A wonderful story of wild animals and humans coexisting peacefully.

Note on last week’s Baked Pumpkin Oatmeal:  it is a good idea to refrigerate any leftovers.

Winners of J-Knit apps have been contacted. Thank you, Bronwyn!

Nature Notes Bob joins me for Nature Notes, but only for a short time because he was grading papers. See show notes for links to bird feeder cleaning information.

The one red leaf, the last of its clan,
That dances as often as dance it can,
Hanging so light, and hanging so high,
On the topmost twig that looks up at the sky.
~Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Nellie by Donna Higgins:   Update on the Crochet flower closure.

I watched You Tube videos and managed to crochet the flowers by myself!  (Charr was out of town.)  My tutorial on attaching the crochet closures is on You Tube and the show blog.  www.knittingpipeline.com

Finished Projects: Piper’s Fancy  My own design.  A crescent shawl with a lace border.

Love the pattern as the texture adds interest without being too fussy.  Every other round is a plain round so it is easy to see where you are in the pattern.

Pipeliner Notes: A correction in last week’s episode. The site for rescuing macramé owls is www.macrameowl.com. The link was correct in the show notes but I made it plural when I said it on the podcast. My apologies to all macramé owls out there and their rescuers.

Deaf Smith, Laurel’s Kitchen, The Moosewood Cookbook were classic cookbooks in the 70's and 80's.

In my oven today: Whole Wheat Bread, Homemade Granola, and

Baked Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Oatmeal from the food blog Perfecting the Pairing. I substituted raisins for chocolate chips.

Nature Notes

Satu mentioned that bats carry rabies and that is true. If you see a bat behaving strangely then beware.

A hawk posed for me and I still had trouble identifying it. A Cooper's Hawk is about the size of a crow and has a rounded tail. The Sharp-shinned hawk is smaller and has a squared off tail.

Sent to me by Goldybear: Autumn by Emily Dickinson

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

Whole Wheat Bread Baking for Zabelle in Montreal. The tutorial and recipe is on the side bar on the show blog. The original recipe came from The Vegetarian Epicure by Anna Thomas c. 1972. (yikes!) Now out of print but it seems there are lots of used copies out there. But none of them probably have as many food stains as mine does. My favorite yeast is SAF available from King Arthur Flour. I also like the recipes on the King Arthur Flour site. This is what the SAF Yeast looks like. I buy the red not the gold. A whole pound for just $5.95!

If you have never made bread before start with white bread. You can also gradually work your way from white bread to whole wheat by slowly changing the ratio.

Don't worry, this is not turning into a food podcast. This was just a diversion.

Episode 39 Spring Peepers

show notes are at www.knittingpipeline.com.  Sponsored by Quince & Co, Three Bags Full, and my Longaberger Home Business.  Thank you, Sponsors!

This episode was pre-recorded several days early as I am leaving for Camp KIP on Tuesday!

Leave a show note on the blog for a chance to win a Frog Mini Project Bag and matching accessory case from Three Bags Full!  Deadline for Week #2 is Thursday April 14th at noon.

Spring Peepers are singing their chorus at night.  Hyla Brook by Robert Frost.

Needle Notes:  I steeked the Norwegian Sweater and used i-cord Three Needle BO to join the shoulders.  Find videos showing technique on the show blog.  Eunny Jang's video on steeking is fantastic!

Blethering Room:  Woolly Serger Thread is not wool.  It is nylon that has a brushed coating.  Find extra thick Woolly Nylon at Schoolhouse Press.  Tips:  Use Kid Silk Haze for reinforcing heel, foot and toe.  No need to cut and weave in ends.  Wooly Nylon works well.  Anna Lena uses Slip Stitch Heel technique on the soles of her children's socks. Love this idea!  I test drove (walked) my darned socks and they feel great.  I darned another sock and am getting better at my technique.

Thanks to my Celtic Cross friends Karen, Heather, Rob, and Deb  (and of course, announcer Kevin) who faithfully listen to Knitting Pipeline.  Music is Amzing Grace recorded at a regular Thursday night rehearsal.

Nature:  Pileated Woodpecker sighting and info about pileated woodpeckers.  Foxes and Fox Sparrows.

Needle Notes: 9 inches left on my Norwegian Sweater.  I identify a malady.  It's Shawl Withdrawal Syndrome.  I have not knitted a shawl since Feb 1.  This is shocking!  I need to stop the madness and get started on one ASAP.  In the Fix It Challenge I knit about 4 rows on a ribbed stocking hat that was too small to give to my dad as a gift.  I share how I sew in the tails on ribbing to make this cap reversible. See show notes for photo tutorial.

Blethering Room:  More comfort knitting from 3 Pipeliners.  Estelle by Melissa LaBarre is a possibility for a KAL.

Review Notes:  Knitting Traditions by Interweave Knits.  Highly Recommended.  Get it before May 15, 2011.

Episode 36 Fix It Challenge

Japan Earthquake Relief

  1. Brenda Castiel is giving $5 from the sale of each of her designs for relief efforts.
  2.  Mary Jo  Colwell (HedgehogMJ) designed Rose of Sharing to benefit The Heifer Project and UMCOR.

Nature Notes:  Panther in Illinois?  Other in my area have seen it. Before repeating anything a little bird told you, be sure it wasn't a cuckoo.

Needle Notes:  I was caught without my shawl comfort knitting last week.  I fixed a pair of Scottish Kilt Hose that I knitted in 1996 before I became a piper.  My Fix It Challenge is to review your knitting to see what needs repair or modifications.  The Norwegian Setesdal Sweater continues.  I am almost done with the body of the sweater.  I want to start knitting a shawl, in particular Stripe Study Shawl.

Pipeliners share their ideas of comfort knitting.  I review the following patterns from Quince & Co:  Barcelona Scarflet, Abbey Road Socks, and Sabrina Mitts.  Leave a comment on the show blog to enter a drawing for one of these patterns and your choice of Tern to make it.  Also Carrie Hoge's pattern new garter stitch baby sweater and cap are adorable.  I review Tern fingering weight yarn by Quince.

View a video of Celtic Cross Pipes and Drums in the Peoria IL St. Patrick's Day Parade on the show blog.  I am in the front row, in the middle and those are my shoes and kilt hose you see for a second or two later on.

Bob and I witnessed the migration of thousands of snow geese at Emiquon.  Find links on the show blog and a video.  Nature quote from Rachel Carson

Episode 34 Socks at Last

www.knittingpipeline.com will have complete show notes.

Quince & Co is the sponsor of this episode.  www.quinceandco.com

Thanks to all who have written.  Thank you to The Knitmore Girls for mentioning my podcast on their popular show.

Talithia suggested a unusual place to view wildlife.  "There are flowers everywhere for those who bother to look." Henri Matisse.

Nature Notes: We have just experienced the snowiest winter on record for our area. March is our transition month from winter to spring.  Bird and animal sightings are plentiful because the woods are bare and animals are moving.

We Like March is a poem by Emily Dickinson.

Blethering Room:  I share about two different places:  The Faroe Islands/Faroe (Scandinavian) and Fair Isle (British).

Tip from Pipeliner Tea aka Teacosy.  Store small bits of stash in a big glass jar.  Beautiful and practical!

I frogged a sock that I started last June.  The pattern was from Toe-Up! By Chrissy Gardiner.  I started a new pair of socks from The Little Box of Socks.  Two techniques: German Twisted Cast-On and Eliminating the Pig's Eye.

I review The Little Box of Socks by Charlene Schurch and Beth Parrott and Kollage DPN's.

Episode 33 Of Lice and Men

Episode sponsor is Quince & Co. and my Longaberger home business.

Travel with me from the Setesdal Region of Norway, to Scotland, to the U.S. to explore lice in knitting and literature.  Robert Burns' poem "To a Louse" is read by Alan Wood of Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland.  Alan is friend of the charming Louise, host of a podcast I enjoy, The Caithness Craft Collective.  I read Robert Frost's poem "A Considerable Speck" which isn't exactly about a louse, but could be.   I review the books that I consider most important for those interested in Norwegian Sweater knitting.  Of course, there are many out there so I just picked my favorites.

  1. Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Without Tears, Knitting Workshop, or The Opinionated Knitter
  2. Sheila McGregor's The Complete Book of Traditional Scandinavian Knitting
  3. Norwegian Knitting Designs by Annichen Sibbern Bohn.

For the very enthusiastic knitters and historians, consider Annemor Sundbo's Setesdal Sweaters: The History of The Norwegian Lice Pattern.

There is an update on my projects, although the Norwegian sweater has been stalled for the past week.  I finished Baby Slippers from Knitting at Home by Leanne Prouse. They turned out lousy. I started on a new project and picked up a pair of socks that had been in hibernation since the summer.

Thanks to everyone who has sent well wishes to my mother who fell last week and broke her arm last week and also to me and the family.  You are wonderful people!

The music is compliments of World Champion Piper, Bruce Gandy, from his CD My Father's Son.  Available at www.brucegandymusic.com.

Episode 32 A Technique Betrayed

Sponsored by Quince & Co. Choosing between Elizabeth Zimmermann's Sewn Bind-Off and The Russian Bind-off is a difficult decision.  Nature:  Eagle sightings, Carolina Wren and the feeder, and deer.  Swatching Tips, Norwegian Luskofte progress, tips for choosing color patterns, and a free sock pattern from a listener in her Etsy shop.  Music by Erik Ask-Upmark.  Norsk Brudsmarsch from Himlen's Polska.

My second Daybreak has a garter stitch border.  A Sofia Cowl looks a lot like crochet, but it really is knitted lace.  I used the Suspended Bind Off on the cowl.   We survived the Blizzard of 2011 and there was a little junco hopping about in the worst of it.  I swatched for the Norwegian Sweater and am ready to cast on.  Tips on color pattern knitting. In The Piping Circle I talk about my husband's uncle, who witnessed the piper, Bill Millin, playing on the beach at Normandy (Episode 9 of Knitting Pipeline).  Review of the Historical Issue of Piecework Magazine Jan/Feb 2011.  Dutch Pipes and Drums provide a medley of tunes from their CD In Harmony.

I read a note Elizabeth Zimmermann wrote when she sent a gift for our newborn son...a Baby Surprise Jacket.  A Pipeliner, Linda from NH, expresses her passion for our beloved craft of knitting. I clarify the process of threading beads onto yarn for the crochet beaded bind off from last week's show. In response to Irene's question, I talk about how I organize my stash and tell a story about the era of cardboard boxes for stash storage and a teenage son. Nature Notes:  John James Audubon.  In Needle Notes we discuss selecting yarn for our Norwegian Sweater KAL and I ask for your input on knitting hats for a friend who is in chemotherapy.  Finally we conclude with an update on Celtic Cross Pipes and Drums which is preparing for the annual Burns Supper.  Musical Selection is from Shira Kammen's CD "A Celebration of Robert Burns", "Flow Gently Sweet Afton."  The show is sponsored by my business:  www.longaberger.com/paula

Episode 27 Knitting is My Passion

Pipeliners chime in on the wearing of ponchos and whether men can wear shawls.  A winner is announced for the prize of 3 patterns from Stephen West of Westknits.  The American Bald Eagle is the topic in nature notes.  In Needle Notes I share my finished Citron, a pattern by Hilary Smith Callis, with a crocheted beaded edging from the book Faith, Hope, Love, Knitting by Lorna Miser.  I also review the book by Lorna Miser and announce a new drawing for a signed copy of the book, donated by the author.  Leave a comment in the show blog to enter.  In the Blethering Room I share more "No Purl Designs" suggested by our listeners.  Finally, some ideas about the Norwegian KAL which will start in a few weeks.
